6 groups 9

Today I learn to solve a question:
Tim's mum had 54 sweet.
She had to share it between her 6 sons. How many sweets did each son get.
I solve it like this:
54 is like 5+4=9
Then I had 6 left so I made 6 groups of 9 =54
On this part that says 6 groups off 9 its 6x9=54
