How to make Takakau

Takakau is a Maori bread

Takakau was made in the 1800’s. The bread was

traditionally made with just flour and water.

To make Takakau you will need:

1 Teaspoon salt

2 cups flour  

2 Teaspoon baking powder

100 ml milk or water

• First you sift the flour and baking powder into a large bowl

• Then You put 1 teaspoon of salt into your bowl.

• 
• Then mix your bowl of ingredients.

• 
• then you will need to mix your bowl while someone else will be pouring milk or water into the centre of your bowl slowly.

• Then you will need to get out a tray with tin foil on top and sprinkle your flour on top of your tray.

• Then you will need to pound on your mixture.
• Then you will need to pour your mixture on top of your tray. Then you will need to shape the dough but you will need the dough to be 2cm thick.
• Then you turn on your oven to 200 celsius and put your dough in the oven for 30 mins

What is a treaty?

A Treaty is a agreement between different groups of people or states.

The treaty of Waitangi is a famous treaty signed by the New Zealand Maori chiefs and the British Government. It is a really important document that New Zealand still use today.

Why did New Zealand need a treaty?

The Maori wanted to sign a treaty because the whalers and the traders  were disrespectful. In New Zealand there wasn’t a law had to follow like there was in England. This meant that the Maori chiefs had no authority over the European visitors. Another reason for the creation of the treaty was the British wanted more control, or sovereignty over New Zealand.

When was the treaty signed?

The treaty of Waitangi was signed on the 6th of February 1840 between the British Government and the Maori Chiefs.

Who signed the treaty?

The British Government and the Maori Chiefs  from all over New Zealand came to sign a law stopping the whales and the traders from getting drunk and beating up each other.

H2O molecule

Today my class and I created a H2O molecule using marshmallow and tooth pick. We put together the marshmallow and made a Mickey mouse looking figure, and it looks like this:

I used 2 hydrogen atoms which are the pink marshmallows and 1 oxygen atom which is the white marshmallow.

As I turned around looking for my group, I had realised that I was stuck in the middle of a strange forest! I ran forward and there was 2 paths! I didn't know which way so I ended up choosing the left path. I saw another group go and I ran and asked did he see a another group go by? He said yes and gave me directions! I was relieved and I followed the directions! I ran and saw my group! Luckily I got there on time because they were about to leave!

Should fishing a Farewell Spit be banned due to the amount of Hector dolphins dying?

I think fishing in Farewell Spit should be banned because due to the amount of Hector dolphins dying! Hector whales die every year due to this problem! Fishermen are killing these innocent sea creatures. Plus these creatures are mostly rare since they are the smallest whales on earth because they only measure 1.5 meters in length! Also these animals are growing less and less!

Whale Rider

This movie is about an ancestor who sailed on the back of a whale to island for help and his name was Paikea. Now every generation the first boy born they are given the name Paikea, and they are going to be the chief. They learn how to be strong and how to defend themselves. Unfortunately a girl was born and her parents had given her the name Paikea but, her grandfather was not expecting her to be given that name. She was secretly learning how to become a chief and how to do a boys haka. She was caught and got a growled. A couple days later where the boys were going to perform the haka, her grandfather saw that she was riding on the back of a whale. She said that everyone can become not only the chosen ones.

Farewell Spit, Golden Bay

Farewell Spit was known ever since the accident of more than 20 whales! The whales where trying to get off shore but it was too shallow! Locals saw the incident and then they grabbed everything they had and made sure it was wet to put on the whales! The locals were doing everything they can to keep them safe! But as the locals notice that the whales weren't moving they knew that the whales couldn't survive. Sadly not 1 whale survive this incident.

Should we be predator free or should we have predators?

I think we should have predators! I know it sounds wrong but it is wrong to kill anyways! We should just find somewhere in New Zealand that has none of the food that it likes! Plus the predators are mostly scattered around New Zealand and plus they can might be gone before we know it! People are saying that we should be predator free and have no predators before the year of 2050! But I think if we can act quick enough then we can have no native birds of New Zealand extinct!

Red Crowned Kakariki

What do they eat?

These creatures are omnivorous, but they mostly eat seeds, plants and fruit. Before spring these birds eat scale insects for breeding purposes.

Where do they normally stay?

These animals can be found around the North, South and on Stewart Island.

How much do they weigh?

They weigh up to 70 - 80 grams!

What is there height?

These creatures may look big but they can be tall as 25 - 28 cm! 

What do they look like?

The bird's main colour is light green, but it has a red spot on it's head which is why it is referred to "Red Crowned Kakariki". It has a short white beak and very tiny legs! It has a long feather that sticks out and looks like a tail!

BONUS ACTIVITY

Last year, the Prime Minister of New Zealand suggested that we should replace the flag with a new, updated design. He invited everyone in New Zealand to come up with their own flag design and submit it.

For this activity, it is your turn to design a new flag. Use any drawing programme that you wish. I would recommend using the Google Drawings programme or the Flag Designer website. It allows you to create a flag in three easy steps. When you are done, take a screenshot of your flag and post it on your blog.

To earn full points you must describe the flag, in words, below the picture. Please tell us what is on the flag and what inspired your design.

Winter Learning Journey/ Day 1 Activity 2

My 5 favourite things about Auckland:

1) In the most parts of Auckland you can see a very large mountain called Rangitoto Island. The volcano is seen in most parts of the city ( You can see Rangitoto from the Sky tower, Harbour bridge, Mission bay beach etc) 

2) The thing that I also enjoy about Auckland is the cultures. What I also like is that you can learn more about the culture in meeting different people. There is a lot of people  that are from different places around the earth that live in New Zealand! 

3) What I like about Auckland as well is that, you can walk along the path walk at Mission Bay. Mission Bay is one of the closest beaches to the city. Plus Mission Bay has an amazing view which is looking straight at Rangitoto island!

4) What I also like about Auckland is that you can explore the Northern coastlines! The Northern coastlines have the most incredible views when the sun is going down! 

5) Last but not least, Auckland has more boats you have ever seen! Auckland has more boats than anywhere else in the world! Auckland's nickname is "The city of Sails"

3 places I like to visit

1. Niue - I like to visit Niue because it as the most beautiful sunsets I've ever seen! During the summer it's hot so that's when me and my family head out to the nice, cold beach! Also it's a paradise and a perfect vacation spot!

2. Tonga - I like to visit Tonga because it's my home island! I love to eat coconut and some fresh Ika (fish) from the ocean! What I also like is that it's a where I can have time and space with my family. Finally what I like about Tonga is that when the sun set's it great for you to go out to the city, mostly because they usually setup fireworks for entertainment.

3.Australia - Last but not least Australia, what I like about Australia is that you see things you don't usually see when your in Australia! You can see snakes that come and go, or stay at your house! (YIKES!) What I also like is that most of my family stay in Australia, so that means I have a lot of fun playing with my cousins and seeing my aunties and uncles!
